McDonalds McCafe Takes Over YouTube

Submitted by Ryan Spoon on May 5, 2009 – 8:39 pmComments

McDonalds has launched an advertising campaign alongside their new McCafe coffee line. You’ve likely seen the new McCafe spots during prime time television and today McDonalds overtook YouTube’s homepage (see screenshots below).

The campaign is interesting in itself – primarily because of the real estate and integrated components… and in a format that we have seen before.

But the most interesting part is how McDonalds defines their iced coffee: based on the diagram it is about 90% “light cream” and 10% “brewed coffee”. Is this actually considered a coffee drink? Did McDonalds diagram it incorrectly and reverse the ingredients? Whatever it is… it cannot be right:

You tube receives tremendous views daily and so McDonalds selects them for advertising.. The way they explained their ice coffee using a arrow diagram is good to see and am seeing like this never before..Sure they will gain more via youtube..

  • Wow that's huge! Talk about economic crisis they absolutely have lots to spare.
  • Have you seen Starbuck's launch of their new campaign this last week? You can read about it here on AdVirtues.com.

Interesting the two came out so close together. Thoughts?
  • Ryan I think your estimation of 90% light cream 10% brewed coffee based on that diagram is weak. There's no way that volume of brewed coffee highlighted would fit nine times into the identified volume of light cream. I'd say something more like 70% light cream and 30% brewed coffee.

By "brewed coffee" do they mean espresso? If so then that would be alright I reckon.
  • It is normal coffee - not espresso. If you check the other McCafe diagrams they say espresso (for instance, for a latte).

That is why the diagram is so strange - an iced coffee would be primarily coffee with a little cream (90/10). This is essentially a glass of cream with a drip of coffee.
