DirecTV Commercial with John Michael Higgins - They Just Don’t Get It
My favorite ad campaign at the moment is DirecTV’s spoof of Comcast and other cable providers. They have the ‘Best in Show’-cast starring and John Michael Higgins tries to convince the executives of ways that his cable company should combat DirecTV.
The best spot is when Higgins says they need to go viral and “blog it out”. Great stuff.
But DirecTV doesn’t get it.
The commercials are terrific and ripe for blogging (as they suggest)… but the ads aren’t even embeddable or available on YouTube. Here is their flash file in widget form - enjoy the commercial and the irony:

Here’s a funny ad in the same genre - but from Dell’s IT perspective.

Okay, I’m actually biased because a buddy of mine is in these spots, but reality check - -
Ohhh you San Fran types, how little thee understandeth Talent & Residuals. One reason that these aren’t on the intertubes may (I don’t know for certain) be that they didn’t wish to clear SAG internet usage for so much heavy-hitting talent (the more actors in your spot, the more expensive it is to air it, obviously). It just gets to be prohibitively expensive and you have to clear for broadcast tv, and anyway, if the spot is good enough, some geek figures out how to get it digitized and onto YouTube. So why should DirecTV fork over a bunch of cash to the actors just so they can be the ones to upload? Cream floats.

I’m looking all over for the blog it out ad but can’t find it. DirecTV doesn’t even have it on their website. I agree that they don’t get it, regardless of talent and residual fees isn’t the point of advertising to get exposure?
