Amazon & McDonalds – A Lesson in Awful Cross Marketing

Submitted by Ryan Spoon on June 3, 2008 – 6:45 pmComments

While I cannot definitively label this as the worst cross-marketing I’ve ever received (see that one here…!) – this isn’t far behind.

Today I received a package of Myoplex Light (a healthy, protein-heavy meal replacement system). In the package, Amazon included a coupon for a free McDonalds Southern Chicken sandwich and a free Southern Chicken Breakfast biscuit. Seriously? The point of me ordering the Myoplex was to eat healthy. Amazon even lists the product under the “Health and Personal Care” category – so not only is the McDonalds cross merchandising completely irrelevant to my purchase… it’s downright cruel and tempting!!

  • That is one amazing use and amazing idea for advertising.
  • that is bad dude
  • Maybe they forgot hat they are selling magazines on how to get a sexy body, LoL they are making you crave for such a delicious food.
  • We cannot blame McDonald from doing this kind of advertising. Its up to us to use or not to patronize the product we think is not healthy . Just like in MLM's, be wary of joining any...think first before leaping not twice but ten times ten.
  • This is such a good collaboration. Surely they'll earn a lot.
  • The irony of this odd combination is irritating. Very unprecedented move by two extremely established companies. I hope that next time, they will be more meticulous in the message that they will be sending across.
  • That Sounds interesting, I agree with you. Please keep at your good work, I would come back often.*
  • Very informative
  • Crappy, unexpected move by two gigantic companies. This is unprecedented and definitely unwanted. Very terrible mix. I hope next time they'd reassess their ways and clear the real message that they want to send across.
  • sometimes advertisement is really powerful, company owners are making sure that the money they paid in advertising is worth paying for
  • don't take that too bad maybe they are just offering some good stuffs,,,,,its true that things like that are really tempting,, or maybe it can be a test to,, test for your self discipline,,,, but to be fair with their promo is a good deal
  • I've been reading along for a while now.
I just wanted to drop you a comment to say keep up the good work
  • That is pretty funny, I can't believe that they would do that. I wonder what the person packing the box thought as (s)he was putting the coupons in there!

That is kind of like me trying to sell a car in my real estate marketing materials. Just wouldn't work to well.
  • Sometimes they do like that..skip those points and try to concentrate on your products which u ordered..
  • The idea of that is quite ridiculous. Eating healthy is difficult enough without temptations like that.
  • Now that's what I call sweet advertising.. =)
    pretty tempting isn't it?
