The Trouble with PerezHilton.com As a Business (Perhaps Blogs For that Matter)

Want celebrity gossip? The online destination of choice is PerezHilton.com - which, according to Perez, boasts larger readership than People Magazine (the perennial #1 print magazine). That success has turned Perez into a star - he has his own MTV and VH1 shows, is seen in celebrity magazines galore and he's fetching sponsorship deals both personally on on his website.

So you would think that PerezHilton.com would be growing because of all of this. Wrong. Pageviews, uniques and visits are relatively flat (perhaps even down).

Why? Simply put:because blogging doesn't scale.

As Perez Hilton becomes more of a star, his focus clearly has shifted. There are fewer daily blog posts and, more importantly, fewer 'meaningful' blog posts (there is now lots of content about Perez himself). There is only so much time in the day and only so much juicy gossip.

Meanwhile, there are ways to solve this. Blogs like TechCrunch, Valleywag and others are hiring full staffs and publishing content more regularly. In fact, PerezHilton.com is quickly taking a backseat to TMZ - which is using its growing staff to out-pace Perez on all fronts.

Gawker is another great example. Sites like DeadSpin.com have strong traffic in their verticals, but they too become flat over time. Growth then comes from the larger network and increase authorship. Kotaku.com, for instance, is surging and Valleywag.com is growing nicely behind it's increased authorship.

Ironic Twist(er) in HD-DVD's Death?

While I hinted at it before, HD-DVD officially died this week.

The most interesting, ironic and overlooked aspect of HD's collapse had less to do with the format and more to do with the final published title:

Twister hit theaters in 1996 and was the first movie ever released on DVD. It also is currently slated to be the final title released on HD DVD (May 3rd)... a sure-to-be Trivial Pursuit question.

Also ironic: Twister will be released on both HD-DVD and Blu Ray!

I love Amazon's New Logo

I just noticed this tonight - Amazon has unveiled a new logo. When you hover over the Amazon Logo on all pages other than Amazon.com, a light frame is added and the word "homepage" appears alongside their famous smile.

I love it. Logos exist in consistent locations on a webpage (the top left corner). Adding a visual element from basic interactions - like a mouse hover - is engaging.

Blackberry Suffers 3rd Outage in 9 Months... UGH

Blackberry is suffering from it's 3rd service outage in 9 months - and it's second in as many weeks... hopefully this isn't a trend.

While the outage was noticeable, everything is running 'relatively' smoothly now - although I did notice spottiness over the weekend. My emails were arriving in delayed clumps and at one point AT&T deactivated the email service despite the voice and data plans running normally (error message "User Suspended"). In other news, I plan on calling AT&T and upgrading to the $99 Unlimited Voice Plan first thing on Feb 22.

PhoneMag is reporting: "Beginning at 3am this morning, apparently around 80-percent of all BlackBerry devices in the continental US have been affected by the issue, with the fault spanning networks and models."

iTunes Podcasts Center - 10 Things That Must be Fixed

I love podcasts (they get me through the day). But, I really hate iTunes Podcasts center.

As iTunes continues to improve, their Podcasts section still seems to be on its first generation. And based on passing conversations with friends at Apple, I am not sure that anyone is actually dedicated to the product (from the consumer side, that certainly makes sense). Here are 10 things that must be fixed.

1. The Release Date Sort Doesn't Work

This kills me because not only is it amazingly simple to fix, its critical to the podcast experience.

The "Release Date" column doesn't sort properly - making it impossible to visually determine which podcasts are newly updated (an important feature for regularly updated podcasts or large libraries).

2. Overuse of Pointless Icons (see exclamation point and information icons above) 3. Search for Podcasts, Get Commingled Search Results 4. Needs a Visual Overhaul 5. iPod Integration Outside of Playlists 6. Separation of Video & Audio Podcasts 7. Directory of Top Podcasts Beyond #100 (iTunes is about the tail after all) 8. Chronicling of "Today's Top Podcasts" Beyond... Today! 9. Ability to Rate & Retrieve Ratings of Podcast "Episodes" 10. Finding Experience for Most Downloaded Episodes / Podcasts of Last 7 / 30 / 365 Days

My Verizon Envy is Gone - AT&T Unveils $99.99 Unlimited Voice Plan!

When Verizon released their plans for a $99 all-you-can-talk plan, I instantly wrote that it was tempting enough to lure me away from AT&T. I concluded that I'd wait a little to see AT&T's reaction... and here it is: unlimited voice for $99.99.

I assume that it will be a lengthy, confusing call to AT&T customer service to get them to switch my account over - but the threat of leaving for Verizon should we powerful enough... right?

$99.99 unlimited voice + $20/$30/$40 data package $20 = unlimited data and 200 texts $30 = unlimited data and 1500 texts $40 = unlimited data and unlimited texts

SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 19, 2008 -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) announced today new unlimited voice plans targeted to wireless users who want the predictability of flat rate pricing for unlimited minutes. The plans will be available to new and existing wireless subscribers for $99.99 a month for unlimited U.S. calling on all devices with no domestic roaming or long distance charges. The plans can be combined with any current wireless data plan to give customers the ultimate in wireless freedom.

The new plans, available Feb. 22, can be ordered at one of AT&T's 2,200 company-owned retail stores and kiosks, at www.att.com, or at one of the thousands of authorized AT&T retail locations. Existing customers can choose unlimited calling without extending their contract. New customers have the option of a month-to-month, 12 or 24 month contract.

As with other voice calling plans, AT&T customers can choose from a variety of MEdia Net and messaging plans to meet their needs. For example, customers with standard wireless phones* can choose a data plan such as $5 for 200 text, picture, video and instant messages or $35 for unlimited messaging and MEdia Net access.

"We are pleased to offer our customers these great new plans that deliver value and simplified pricing," said Ralph de la Vega, president & CEO, AT&T Mobility. "This is a highly competitive market and we're committed to moving fast to meet customer needs."

AT&T customers benefit from the nation's largest digital voice and data network, with 3G broadband available in more than 260 major metropolitan markets. The company recently announced plans to expand its 3G network to 350 markets, including all of the top 100.

Until Dunkin Donuts Opens Up in San Francisco (or California for that matter)...

I still believe there is a ton of money to be made by bringing Dunkin Donuts out to California (there are enough east coast transplants in LA, San Jose and San Francisco)... but until someone pulls together enough money to do so, I will continue to use the only resource better than Amazon - my mother! Dunkin Donuts

any time you get a package of dunkin donuts, life is grand!

Is Mahalo's Growth Coming From Video Games?

Mahalo has grown very nicely over last two quarters and, according to Quantcast, now reach over 800,000 uniques monthly. While my searching behavior still starts at Google and goes to Wikipedia for informational needs - I find myself using Mahalo for topics that are either: 1) very current (Google still struggles breaking news within results sets - see American Idol finalists) 2) wide but shallow (lots of content but no definitive / authoritative leader)

Apparently users agree that for Mahalo works for video games searches (which work for both of the above bullets). Below are the top 20 Mahalo pages - 13 of which are gaming related. And if you look at Quantcast's related websites, there is a theme of gaming (see below).

Mahalo has a video games hub, but it might make sense to create / pursue a deeper video game portal or network (Wikia is experimenting there).
